Importance of Proper Liver Functioning
Liver - this word definitely originates from the word “to live”, and there is no doubt about this because it is impossible to underestimate the importance of this organ for the body and for our life. Liver is, for sure, our everything. It is the largest and very multi-functional body organ responsible for most vital functions such as digestion, blood sugar management, production of blood clotting factors for healing and amino acids, red blood cell growth increasing, transport of cholesterol and fat, removal of harmful waste, especially toxic substances (medicines, pollutants etc.), metabolization of medicines into active ingredients, and fighting infections.
As liver is of paramount importance and it is not a pair organ (like kidneys, lungs etc.), the nature took care of it and made it the only body organ that can regenerate, or heal itself after damage. This is possible thanks to hepatocytes making 80% of all liver cells. These magic cells are capable of self-renewal after the injury. However, their capacity can be affected by conditions when too many cells are damaged and/or lost, like cirrhosis. In this case, own hepatocytes reserves are not sufficient.
Liver Cirrhosis
Liver cirrhosis is a severe complication of many liver diseases characterized by distortion of liver architecture and its functions. Diseases leading to cirrhosis cause death of liver cells (hepatocytes) resulting in inflammation and triggering of reparative processes - excessive growth of fibrous (scar) tissue. In the attempt to substitute for the missing (dead) cells, the remaining undamaged liver cells multiply and form clusters of the new cells (regenerative nodules) inside the scar tissue. As the number of the nodules grows, the liver gradually loses its functional capacity, meaning that its ability to control infections, remove bacteria and toxins from the blood (detox), process nutrients, hormones and drugs, make proteins regulating blood-clotting, and produce bile helping with absorption of fats, including cholesterol and fat-soluble vitamins is impaired, thus harmful substances and toxins can be carried to any system of organs and tissues with the blood flow. The most dangerous is toxic effect on central and peripheral nervous system. Cirrhosis changes the person, both physically and psychically, and at times working and living with these people is uneasy.
Conventional treatment of liver cirrhosis is intended for protection of the cell from further damage with medicines, through metabolic correction, and stimulation of gall secretion. This can improve the patient’s condition, but it neither stops its progression nor eliminates the cause. In advanced or end-stage cirrhosis, liver transplantation is the only option, which is costly, requires lifelong immune suppression, and the availability of transplants is far lower than the demand for them, which means waiting for a very long time.
Stem Cell Therapy for Liver Cirrhosis
For the treatment of Liver Cirrhosis we are using unique patented method that was developed in joint effort of the scientists and doctors of Infinity Clinic.
Until the advent of stem cell science and therapy, cirrhosis was regarded as incurable and fatal diseases because the damage caused was irreparable. Stem cells and stem cell therapy have offered a new dimension for regenerative medicine and opened a new page in treatment of liver cirrhosis.
Infinity Clinic has developed fetal progenitor cell-based method of cirrhosis treatment that has proven its efficacy in many cases. We offer tailored combination of different fetal progenitor cell types and fetal tissue extracts preceded by plasmapheresis cleaning the blood from toxins, free radicals and preparing the body for better engraftment of stem cells. Fetal progenitor cells are the transition between embryonic and adult cells and combine the advantages of these two sources.
Fetal progenitor cells
- have very high proliferation potential (give rise to mature progenies with self-renewing capacity)
- differentiate into different cell types, including both bile duct cells and mature hepatocytes
- play an immunomodulatory role by producing inhibitory cytokines or inducing the development of regulatory T-cells
- act through multiple mechanisms to coordinate a dynamic, integrated response to liver inflammation and fibrosis, which prevents the progressive distortion of hepatic architecture
- have anti-fibrotic properties and pro-regenerative capacity meaning that they can support the expansion of regenerating hepatocytes through ameliorating the inflammatory and fibrotic hepatic microenvironments, thus, expand the population of functional hepatocytes
- secrete protective and nourished factors preventing progressive apoptosis of functional cells
- replace damaged liver cells with healthy exogenous functional ones (compensate for the loss of their counterparts) and normalize regenerative processes in the tissues
- produce various growth factors and cytokines, including hepatocyte growth factor exerting protective role against liver injury and critical for liver regeneration
- fuse with the body’s own liver cells to direct their regeneration (stimulate their replication)
- restore vascular network in the affected area meaning additional blood and oxygen supply
- have low immunogenicity or no rejection risk (no need for immune suppression)
Stem Cell Therapy Effects
- improvement in multiple diagnostics and biochemical parameters (ALT, AST, serum albumin etc.)
- skin itching disappearance
- lesser icteric discoloration of sclera and skin
- subsidence of edema
- subsidence of pain
- hepatic histology improvement
- fibrotic index reduction (consequence of dissolving the existing fibrosis and
- clinical and functional improvements in hepatic encephalopathy cases by virtue of synthetic, metabolic and detoxifying functions of fetal progenitor cells
- reduction of portal hypertension, meaning lower risk of recurrent hemorrhages
- subsidence of cirrhosis severity (Child Score)
- prevention of complications and subsidence of their symptoms at early stages
- more effective disease management
- powerful immune boosting
- general health improvement
- life quality improvement and longer life expectancy
- additional waiting time for transplantation (if necessary)
Advantages of the Stem Cell Therapy in the Infinity Clinic
- optimal combination of fetal progenitor cell types and tissue extracts tailored for each case with regard to the main disease, its complications and co-morbidity
- extensive experience
- minimally invasive treatment (no surgery involved)
- plasmapheresis (elimination of toxins, free radicals etc. from plasma, body preparation for better fetal progenitor cell engraftment)
- advanced safety screening of the cells
- no adverse effects
- no rejection risk
- no cancer risk
