Liver cirrhosis

The liver participates in variety of functions that are essential for the maintenance of homeostasis that could be roughly categorized as: synthetic functions, bile secretion and detoxification. These functions are realized due to activity of highly specialized cells of the liver that contain abundant intracellular biosynthetic machinery and detoxifying enzymes. Despite the fact that liver has a low rate of cellular turnover under physiological conditions, it shows significant regenerative potential in response to the injury due to activity of the stem and progenitor cells that are able to differentiate into hepatocytes. However, long lasting chronic inflammation combined with are-related decrease in activity of adult liver stem cells of the patient could lead to exhaustion of regeneration capacities of the liver. Persistent inflammation in combination with insufficient regeneration results in fibrosis of the liver. Fibrosis and subsequent cirrhosis of the liver is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality related to the diseases of the liver. Administration of the fetal stem cells could increase regeneration potential of impaired liver. Fetal stem cells could migrate into the liver and differentiate into new hepatocytes that would substitute damaged and dying cells. Also, anti-inflammatory mediators will decrease chronic inflammation that is considered to be one of the main elements of liver cirrhosis pathogenesis. Infinity Clinic developed comprehensive methods for the treatment of liver cirrhosis based on administration of fetal stem cells of the liver. Efficiency of fetal stem cell administration for the treatment of patients suffering from liver cirrhosis was evaluated by the positive dynamics of the levels of the aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), total bilirubin and total protein (figures 1,2,3,4).
